Hearts Ease - an Elizabethan lute recital

The core of this programme takes inspiration from the melancholy that was so beloved of the Elizabethans. Far from the depression we associate with it today, melancholy was - to the Renaissance mind - an inspired, darkly consoling state of being. They understood that, in order to be happy, we must also know how to be sad.

Music by Francis Cutting, Jacob Reys, and John Dowland

Dowland Works

The music of John Dowland forms the core of this intimate programme, which brings together young performers and seasoned specialists in an exploration of the rich heritage of lute songs left to us by Dowland and some of his contemporaries such as John Danyel, John Coprario, and Angelo Notari. The concert forms part of Dame Emma’s 70th Birthday Tour.
